Luvo Lucent IPL

IPL stands for “Intense Pulsed Light,” a technology used in various skin treatments, including hair removal and photofacials. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is used for photo rejuvenation delivering energy at different wavelengths to address a variety of aesthetic and dermatologic treatment goals.

IPL treatments are generally non-invasive and may be utilized for a range of aesthetic conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Hair removal: IPL targets the melanin in hair follicles to reduce hair growth on the face, neck, chin, and body. The melanin absorbs the light and transforms it into heat energy to destroy hair follicles, preventing new hair growth long term.
  • Pigmentation Issues: It is used to treat photoaged skin with various filters to treat sunspots, age spots, melasma, and other pigmentation irregularities. It can balance skin tone by targeting melanin to either break down excess pigment or stimulate pigment production in under-pigmented areas.
  • Vascular Lesions: IPL can target blood vessels and shrink vessels over time to improve the appearance of spider veins, broken capillaries, and rosacea. The light energy is absorbed by the hemoglobin and converted into heat, which damages the walls of the targeted blood vessels, causing them to collapse and eventually be absorbed by the body. It can also reduce general redness and the appearance of rosacea by targeting dilated blood vessels.
  • Acne: IPL is effective treatment for acne. It targets the P. Acnes bacteria killing the bacteria to improve active acne, reduce inflammation and redness, and minimize future breakouts for healthier looking skin.
  • Photo Rejuvenation: Lucent IPL offers noninvasive rejuvenation aimed at improving the skin’s overall texture and appearance. It can treat a range of issues such as sun damage, minor acne, age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. It improves tone and texture, and the heat stimulates collagen which increases volume and smooths texture.

How does IPL work?

The IPL device emits light pulses that penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the targeted chromophores (molecules that absorb light), such as melanin, hemoglobin, or water in collagen. The light energy is converted to thermal energy, which causes controlled damage to the targeted area, stimulating the body’s natural healing processes. This can result in the elimination of unwanted pigment or blood vessels, improved collagen formation, or destruction of hair follicles.

How many treatments are needed?

IPL Photofacials generally require multiple sessions, but the number of treatments and the frequency depend on the conditions being treated and each patient’s individual needs.

What is the recovery after an IPL treatment?

There is minimal downtime after an IPL treatment. Immediately after a treatment you can expect some redness and swelling that usually subsides within a few hours to a few days. Your skin may darken initially before it gets better.

Applying cool compresses can alleviate any discomfort. It is essential to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen to protect the new skin as it will be sensitive to sun exposure for several weeks. There may be some mild skin flaking and dryness as the skin heals. Use a mild, fragrance-free moisturizer to help keep the skin hydrated.
