Kybella

A double chin is not an indication that a patient is fat. In fact, many patients with double chins are at a healthy weight.  Double chins tend to run in families. A double chin is often called submental fullness.

Fully 8 out of 10 Americans report they are distressed by their double chin. Patients can try hiding their double chin with scarves, turtlenecks, and careful posing in photos. With the proliferation of selfies, more and more people feel self-conscious about their double chins.

If you have tried neck exercises, home remedies, creams, and camouflage, it may be time to consider Kybella. It is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin. By physically destroying fat cells, Kybella can improve the appearance and profile.

What causes a double chin?

There are 3 main causes:

  • Weight gain. However, losing weight will not necessarily eliminate a double chin. The fat in a double chin is often unable to be changed with diet and exercise.
  • Fat that accumulates under the chin is determined by genetics. Thus, double chins tend to run in families.
  • As we age, we lose muscle and skin tone that can result in a double chin.

What are the available treatments for a double chin?

  • Kybella
  • Liposuction
  • Neck lift
  • Laser treatments
  • Cool Sculpting

Kybella is the only nonsurgical treatment for a double chin. Liposuction, neck lifts and laser treatments are all invasive. With Kybella, you get all the benefits without the risks of surgery.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is a nonsurgical treatment to reduce moderate to severe submental fat and reduce fullness in the treated area. The active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. It is injected into the treatment area during an office visit.

  • Enhance a fatty, aging neck by removing excess fat. Kybella will not remove sagging skin.

Your Consultation

During your consultation with Dr. Michael Rains, he will examine your chin and review your medical history. He will inquire about your aesthetic concerns and goals and determine if you are a good candidate for Kybella.  You may not be a good candidate if you have a skin infection, excessive laxity or prominent muscle bands in the neck. Children under the age of 18 are not candidates.

How many treatments are needed?

Dr. Rains will determine the number of treatments you need to achieve your goal. Up to 6 treatments may be needed, spaced no less than 1 month apart.

Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions.  Although results are noticeable, they are not immediate.  Kybella works gradually to destroy fat cells.  Once the aesthetic effect is achieved, further treatment is not necessary.

The entire procedure should last about 15-20 minutes. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. Fat cleared from the treatment area is processed through your body’s natural metabolism.
